April 10, 2007 – 10:50 pmI had to sign a form tonight that has this legalese about permissions I’m granting to ACM by submitting my abstract to an evolutionary computing conference. Maybe I’m not around legal-speak enough to think that using the term ‘universe’ this seriously is not at all strange:

I like his article, “The devil’s guide to citing the literature”. I’ve certainly felt it takes a deal with the devil just to understand the correct bibliographic formats for citations. I think there is a special spot in hell for whoever came up with all those rules.

I think the real problem is that people think they have to follow the rules. I don’t think they do. I think those rules are merely arbitrary timewasting conformity. Cite it in a way that is specific enough to find the original source. That’s all.
