Some subjects go well together

I like the fact that Amazon.com, in their product recommendations, offered me books on these two subjects right next to each other:

Yes, computers and anger are a natural fit. Amazon.com knows this. The technology wins every time, and we are left to fume at its dominance over us, as this classic clip perfectly captures:

  2. That pairing is even more apropos if you have ever tried to do any of the exercises in H&P. Definitely one of the most hardcore CS texts out there.

  3. And here’s a quick grad school story: I took Architecture in grad school. It was maybe the toughest class I have EVER had. The text was H&P…in each set of problems some are starred (*) indicating the “you have got to be kidding me” category. Usually, for homework, my prof assigned us one or two “normal” problems, one or two “star bitches”, and a couple that he made up himself that were usually HARDER than the star problems!

    i told u I was hardcore.

  4. Wow, that prof sounds like quite a bastard. At least now you can get some mad CS props since you’ve got the street cred of having survived that course. Your story reminds me of Dr. Dong S. Ha at Virginia Tech, who in his thick accent introduced a digital design course with “Before you get A, first you must cry!”

Hopefully you won’t encounter similar profs during your PhD studies!

  5. BTW does your Architecture prof have any ratings on ratemyprofessor? I wonder if anyone else has been burned by his “star bitches” and “ultra-super-mega star bitches”.
