All thumbs

Funniest movie review I’ve read in a long while came from William Gibson’s blog today:

Just back from V FOR VENDETTA. More thumbs up than a Chernobyl pianist. Superb. Splendid. Heartening. Go see.

Works for me; I’m there, dude!

  2. I enjoyed it quite a bit. What did you think?

  3. While not awesome, it was a very entertaining flick. I think it could have had more dramatic weight to it if the themes had not been so oversimplified. The second half was much more interesting than the first, and the ending was really cool (for example, I liked the symbolism in the scene with the crowd unmasking themselves). It also took a while to get used to V’s masked face spitting out muffled dialog.

I couldn’t help but laugh when Natalie Portman was bawling during her head-shaving scene. She seemed so… toddler-like.

“I see no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot!”

If I were Republican, this movie would probably piss me off.

  7. I can’t figure out how to get a direct link to your review - can you paste it here?

Looks like Yahoo doesn’t want to let us do anything without registering - the side effect is that I can’t search for a specific Yahoo member’s reviews!

  8. Yeah, Yahoo doesn’t facilitate searching or browsing. They’d rather you not find anything. Here you go.

Good film, chilling plot, characters puzzling

The Matrix Brothers (I don’t know their names) seem to do a pretty good job with Alan Moore’s book. The plot, a young woman meets a mysterious freedom-fighter in a fascist Britain of the near future, hits so close to current world events as to be absolutely frightening. Amazing that Moore wrote it over 20 years ago.

The movie looks very stylish, dark and oppressive to match its themes. The actors all did pretty good jobs, including a small but unexpectedly good turn from Ben Miles (Coupling’s Patrick).

What’s left a little wanting is the portrayal of Evey and V, the main characters. Sometimes you just have no idea what’s going on in Evey’s head, whether she is supposed to be throwing her lot in with V or running away from him. This made a few scenes awkward. We get a pretty flat portrayal of V, who is a justified hero here instead of psycho anarchist who is just as ends-justify-the-means crazy as his opponents: an antidote for the oppression and the better of the two options, yet a flawed antihero nonetheless.

All in all though, the movie was well done and very enjoyable despite its heavy themes. This is an important movie for these times.

  9. Hmm, guess I better add this to my Netflix queue.
